Lanseria Airport Background and History

Lanseria International Airport started out as a grass strip airfield about 30 years ago being the brain-child of two Pretoria pilots – Fanie Haacke and Abe Sher. The land was originally bought by Krugersdorp and Roodepoort Municipality together with the Transvaal Peri-Urban Board and contracted to Lanseria Management Company on a 99 year lease since 1972.

The airport was officially opened by the Minister of Transport at the time, Hannes Rall on the 16th of August 1974 and soon after it's opening Lanseria Airport hosted the Air Africa ’75 (in 1975). This event was the first time South African buyers could select aircraft and the aircraft equipment from companies located in the US, Canada, the UK, and France. In 1991 Lanseria Airport was sold to private investors.

Pertinent services such as Air Traffic Control, Fuel, Security, Apron Services, Emergency Services, Fixed Based Operators (FBOs), Customs and Excise, Immigration, Health, etc are operational 365 days a year.

All the relevant government departments such as Immigration, Border Police (SAPS), SARS (Customs and Excise), Health, Nature Conservation, Agriculture, National Intelligence and Veterianarian Services are represented at Lanseria Airport. The airport requires prior notification for the transportation of live animals, agricultural and animal products.

Lanseria International Airport might have started out as an air strip but it has evolved with time to become an airport with international status and quickly becoming one of the busiest airports in Africa.

A very proud fact for Lanseria International Airport concerning Nelson Mandela and a place in history is: When the former South African president was released from prison in 1990 he was flown to Johannesburg landing at Lanseria International Airport.
